Suppliers List

These are items we recommend for use in Berkut. Some of the more common things such as metal, we have not specified since most builders can find these things easily. We’ve provided you with where to get the items and the part numbers you’ll need to place the order. A number of items require a distributor and therefore may be ordered through us. Many of these parts are by no means exclusive to the Berkut. We have purposely not listed prices because they change often and we felt it best you contact the vendors for pricing. We welcome any additions to this list.

This is the actuator Steve Drybread recommended as an alternative to the one we can no longer easily obtain. Please contact us for installation. It should be installed just like to old one. DO NOT use the Alex Strong install directions, they will not work and require a lot of work you do not need to do.

    Mixture-100"
    Slave-51"
The cable part number is the same for each cable, you just need to tell them the lengths and use of the specific cable. These cables are high quality and thus a bit more pricey than what is available from Spruce.
  • Throttle Quadrants
    Aircraft Spruce
    Two Lever Quadrant Part #05-15910
    Single Lever Quadrant Part #05-15905
Most people prefer the two-lever quadrant in the front and the single lever in the back. You certainly may use a two-lever quadrant in the back if you wish for the passenger to have a mixture control, however this will require another slave cable. This is not the only throttle quadrant to choose from but one that fits easily in the Berkut console. Dave removes the knobs and shortens the levers, as they are quite tall. He then machines new knobs but some builders have just shortened the levers and used the same or different knobs.

The six cylinder exhaust for the Berkut is part number 33803 however just requesting the item should do it. We suggest you ask for the pipes to be back-gassed which creates a cleaner weld on the inside of the tube, thus less drag. This is about $30 more and is entirely up to you.

    Versaflex 2 1/2" OD x 2 7/8" ID Item #443721
This is the hose that goes between the fuel servo (Bendix or Airflow Performance) and the elbow going into the air intake box. Previously, we used orange or black SCAT tubing or an equivalent however we found this material is easily corroded by fuel which finds it way there from overpriming. When this happens the suction of air causes the tube to collapse preventing the engine from getting air and robbing it of a lot of power. This Versaflex will not do this and should hold up for a long time.

Fuel System Components

  • Fuel Caps
available from Aircraft Spruce or Wicks Aircraft
    Spruce #05-28658 or Wicks #FF36L
This is a light weight, glass-in fuel cap made in England. Unlike some caps, this one is nearly idiot-proof and there is no question about whether the cap is closed or not. The cap is available with a lock though I have not provided its part number. You’ll need two for the strakes and two if you choose to build the auxilary wing tanks.
  • Fuel Filter
    available from Aircraft Spruce
    Flow Ezy Fuel Filter Part#05-28905
  • Fuel Drains
available from Aircraft Spruce or Wicks Aircraft
    Spruce or Wicks #F391-18
These are flush mount fuel drains that are 1/8” NPT. You’ll need two for the strake tanks and two if you are building the auxiliary wing tanks.
  • Fuel Pump
    available from Aircraft Spruce
    Part #8163-A Weldon Fuel Pump
    or
    Velocity Aircraft

    Part# B-8120-J Weldon Fuel Pump
Our previous source for fuel pumps has been Velocity Aircraft, however we have recently started recommending the Weldon Fuel Pump carried by Aircraft Spruce. Either pump will work just fine and the prices are about $30 different.
  • Fuel Pumps for aux tanks
available from Aircraft Spruce or Wicks Aircraft
    Facet Fuel Pump Part #40105
You will require two of these only if you are building the auxiliary fuel tanks.
  • Fuel Sight Gauges
    Vance Atkinson

    email: Nostromo56@home.com
The fuel sight gauges consist of 1/8" plastic, one white to enhance the fuel line and the other a clear bubble that is extruded from a two-piece mold. They fit over the existing space on the fuselage that the plans call for. They will fit the Vari-Eze, Long-EZ, Cozy, Velocity, Defiant, Berkut and Aerocanard. There is also a small float for easier viewing. They come with optional internal lighting and detailed instructions.
  • Fuel Sump Check Valve
    Deering Industries
    3300 Cherry Ave
    Long Beach, CA 90807
    (562) 595-1668
    Part # AN6207-8D (2 per plane)
After receiving this part, open it and remove the tiny spring inside then reclose it and it is ready to use.

  • Cowl Hardware
The following parts are the 4002 series camloc hardware for the cowls. The part numbers listed below are from the Spruce catalog. Do not purchase a receptacle drill jig, you do not need it and the price is insane. Do not buy the whole saw, it is unnecessary. The 360 and 540 cowls require 16 of each of these items. If you have a 360, do not put camlocs on the trailing edge of the cowl or the area just ahead of the prop. We now recommend screws, tinnerman washers and nut plates be used instead, as they are on the 540.
    Receptacles - Part # 214-16N
    Large Area Grommet - Part# 4002-N3
    Grommet Snap Ring - Part# R4G
Stud - Part # 4002-4, -5 or -6 (You won't know which of these you need without trying them. The Spruce catalog has instructions on how to figure this out, but even then it is not easy.)
    Camloc fastener pliers - Part# 4P3
    Snap Ring Tool - Part# T26
Tinnerman Stainless Countersunk Washers - Part#WA10 (Buy a bag of 100)

The hydraulic manifold shown in the plans no longer applies. Instead the gear dump valve and two "T" fittings are used. Most people are putting the dump valve on the panel at the upper left instead of between the pilots legs, making it much easier to get to. The "T" fittings needed are as follows: AN804-4D and the bulkhead nut is AN-924-4D. The hydraulic lines come forward from the left console, through the instrument panel. The bulkhead fittings and nuts attach to a couple of 1/8" phenolic tabs (1.25" wide x 1.5" tall and stick straight out from the side of the fuselage), one lower tab about 3" ahead of the instrument panel and the upper one is about 4". The geometry of the dump valve and lines will dictate where the phenolic tabs go. Obviously you are going to need 6 B-nuts and 6 sleeves (818-4D and 819-4D).

    Item: Stainless Steel Tube 0.125 x 0.020 316 seamless
A standard length of this material is 20 feet. This company requires a minimum order of $25 which is covered by one length of the material.Twenty feet will do the job but do not waste it or you'll need another length. Before you cut this material, use some welding rod to get the bends you want then shape the stainless line and cut it to avoid mistakes and the need for more material.
The approximate length requirements are as follows (again do not cut this length before you apply it to your application):
Inboard bulkhead fitting to the sequence valve: 26.5" x 2
Inboard bulkhead fitting to the outboard gear door cylinder: 36.5" x 2
Along the length of the gear leg: 43" x 2
    Brake line curl: 14" x 2

NOTE: You may use 0.187" or 0.25" tubing, if you have the room between the gear leg and the gear leg depression.

In addition to producing a great parachute, Para-Phernalia produces some great Berkut luggage for the strakes in the form of their standard parachute carry-all bag. The parachute bags conform to the strakes to allow you to stuff the bag completely into the strakes. They will hold a lot of clothes and are available in a number of colors. We'd suggest requesting handles attached to both ends so the bags may be easily pulled in and out of the strakes. Sizes also vary depending on the bag chosen but generally are about 13" wide by 2.25" thick and vary in length from 21" to 35". Embroidery is also available.

The 5-point harness used in a few Berkut's is the Acrobelt from Alan Silver. Take a look at the site, under the heading Acrobelt and there should be all the information you need for ordering the belt. Though the Acrobelt indicates it is a ratcheting system, Mr. Silver knows the ratchet is not used in the Berkut and he can make the belt without the ratchet.

Century Spring is the manufacturer of thousands of springs. You will often find a huge collection in a number of hardware stores however the hardware store springs have different numbers than the springs bought directly from Century Spring even though they are the same spring. For some springs such as this one, there is no hardware store equivalent. I have also included the technical information for the particular spring so you can shop by size if your hardware store doesn't carry the Century brand, however you may not be able to find the exact spring size and you'll have to get it from Century. Century Spring will accept credit cards but they do have a $30 minimum order.

Tires and Tubes

  • Main Gear Tires
    Aircraft Spruce and Specialty
    11.400-5 (8 ply) Tire: Part# 06-07500
  • Main Gear Tubes
    Aircraft Spruce and Specialty
    11 x 4.00-5 Tube: Part #06-07600
These are the Chen Shing tubes and the quality appears to have changed since we started using them. The problem is that the inner diameter of the tube extends beyond the inner rim of the tire and is not flat, but wavy, resulting in a tendency for the tube to get pinched when you put the wheel halves together. We have found a supplier with a much better tube that does not have the bad characteristics of the Chen Shing tube. They are a little more expensive but definitely worth it.

    Burnsville, MN 55337

These are Deli tubes and are a much better choice than the Chen Shing tubes.
    They run about $7 each.
